About the event

5th Wave Collective makes its New Music Gathering debut, presenting the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by Ruby Fulton: the girl who cried pain: a theme & variations. Written especially for 5th Wave flutist Anatolia Evarkiou-Kaku, this piece is a musical reflection on pain, pain relief , the perception of pain, and the effect of one's gender on being believed about pain.

5th Wave Collective members Anatolia Evarkiou-Kaku (flutes), Carmen Abelson (violin) and Rebecca McDaniel (vibraphone) will share a bill with New Gallery Concert Series, Duo Extreme, and José Martínez. The pre-recorded concert will begin at 1:00pm Central Time, and will be streamed via Zoom. Click here to register for New Music Gathering, which will grant access to 5th Wave Collective's performance. All online programming is FREE, but registration is required.

New Music Gathering is an annual conference/festival hybrid dedicated to the performance, production, promotion, support, and creation of new and forward-thinking music. The 2021 New Music Gathering is a hybrid event, with in-person, streaming events taking place in St. Paul, MN, from August 12-14, and all-virtual programming taking place August 14-18. Click here to see the full conference schedule.

Creation of this work is partially supported by a Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events Individual Artists Program grant, and by a grant from the Idaho Commission on the Arts.

Special congratulations to 5th Wave flutist Anatolia Evarkiou-Kaku, who spearheaded the commission of this work.
